Providing Family Therapy can be an intimidating prospect for even seasoned counselors and therapists. Counselors and mental health practitioners must walk the tightrope of joining with each family member while avoiding triangulation or an overfocus on the identified client. Yet, Family Therapy offers tools for change that may prove more effective than individual therapy alone for many clinical presentations. This workshop will encourage and empower clinicians of all backgrounds and experience levels to engage families and couples in treatment. We will examine the primary principles of Family Systems Theory and discuss brief interventions that practitioners can use to begin working with families.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the primary principles and interventions of Family Systems Theory
  • Understand the influence of Family Systems Theory on mental health symptomology and treatment
  • Examine the primary tasks and strategies of family systems and how these tasks and strategies perpetuate through the generations
  • Implement key skills and interventions for effectively working with families in their counseling or therapeutic practice
