The cultural diversity within the United States continues to grow. Some individuals immigrating to the United States may be undocumented or hold a refugee or asylum status. As Counselors, we must understand the unique challenges faced by these groups and potential barriers to effective helping. In this session, we will explore a need-based, trauma-informed approach to support these diverse groups.

By the end of this training session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe undocumented immigrant, asylum seeker, and refugee populations, particularly cultural groups that have been accessing services in our college and community mental health settings In Dallas County
  • Analyze the ethical and professional competency standards for counseling diverse populations
  • Identify challenges that may impact the mental health of these diverse groups
  • Explain how a trauma-informed, need-based counseling approach is helpful when serving these groups
  • Integrate this framework into their counseling practice when serving undocumented immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees

Presenter: Teresa Parnell, MS, LPC

Teresa Espino Parnell, LPC, is the Director of the University of North Texas at Dallas and co-founder of Adulting Counseling and Consulting, where she provides bilingual mental health counseling services. Teresa holds a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Community Mental Health Counseling from The University of North Texas at Dallas. She has more than 7 years of clinical experience working with emerging adults in higher education and private practice and survivors of intimate partner and family violence using the theoretical frameworks of Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy. She has extensive experience serving culturally diverse individuals in the DFW area, including individuals who identify as undocumented immigrants, asylum seekers, or refugees.

Presenter: Erin Kaszynski, PhD, LPC

Dr. Kaszynski is the Associate Director of Clinical Education and Research at ACER. She holds a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision with an emphasis in Multicultural Counseling and is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas. Dr. K has experience providing trauma-focused services to a diverse population across multiple counseling settings. Trauma-focused, multiculturally responsive care is a theme in her professional training, teaching as a professor, and research in the counseling field.
